Age 11 is an appropriate time to start at a new school. It is at this stage of a pupil's development that a new environment and a fresh approach can make a big impact - especially an environment such as ours at Bales Independent School, where every student is expected to take advantage, on a daily basis, of the level of individual attention they are receiving.

It is the aim of all our teachers to deliver lessons that are characterised by:

• Energy • Academic Rigour
• Enthusiasm • Traditional values
• Vitality and relevance • Structure, organisation and innovation
• Discipline • Promoting the joy of learning
•Use of up to date materials and equipment • Teaching respect - for other people, property, the environment and other cultures

We do not see the points listed in the left hand column as being contradictory to those on the right. For example, it is perfectly possible and desirable, in our view, to be working responsibly with modern science equipment and computers and simultaneously to care much about spelling, punctuation and grammar. We always correct spelling mistakes, point out missing or incorrect units and dimensions in scientific calculations, and insist on axes on graphs being correctly labelled, even if the student would prefer us not to.

Our current teaching plans are based upon having 12-14 students per class in each of years 7-11. With such numbers, it is not possible to 'hide in the back row'. Our teaching ensures that every student makes valuable verbal contributions to every lesson, and is very sensitive to and aware of the times when a student is struggling with a topic, in which case an appropriate response to this is made promptly and effectively.
Lessons are conducted in an atmosphere that is friendly but disciplined. Students are not allowed to call out randomly and do not call teachers by their first name. A practical but smart uniform helps to maintain an atmosphere in which every student feels part of the group and is valued.
