Introduction

The A Level is a modern History course based mainly in the 20th century, covering British, European and world history. The aim is to develop vital analytical skills through investigation, interpretation and evaluation of evidence allowing students to make judgements on controversial issues. You will gain an understanding of political, social, economic and religious ideas, knowledge of various primary sources and an opportunity to express your own ideas.

The Edexcel course has been carefully selected to give a balanced and wide-ranging syllabus that can be directed towards the interests of the students in each particular year group. There will always be some choice given to the group as to which particular options are taken in each unit.

Am I suited?

You will be suited if you:
• Enjoy asking questions about the past and why things happen today
• Express your own views logically through written argument and discussion
• Like to read, analyse and evaluate a wide range of texts and documents

Subject complements

History goes well with virtually any other A Level subject. It can complement subjects like Geography, English Literature and languages, or provide a change from science subjects.

Where does it lead?

A Level History is extremely useful whether as a direct lead-in to a university degree, or as a way of developing your writing, analytical and argumentative skills, all of which are essential in today's business world.
History A Level would be particularly useful for a career in politics, journalism, law, marketing, research, teaching, or academia.
