A Level retakes at Bales Independent Sixth Form College, London
We were one of the first of London's Independent Colleges to be established, back in 1966. Since then we were founder members of CIFE, the Conference for Independent Further Education.
We use this experience to help students from various educational backgrounds retake their A Levels. Over the years, many thousands of students have come to us disappointed with their A Level results, and lacking confidence in their own abilities. We strive to first raise their confidence levels by looking at their strengths, and then to help them achieve better results. Many students end up doing better than even they had hoped for!
Options available for A Level retakes:
• combined AS and A2 retakes over 1 year
• start in year 12 again, after 1 year of A Levels elsewhere, either to improve on current grades or due to change in subjects.
• start in year 13, to retake just A2 modules
Improve grades!
With competition for places at the top universities higher than ever, students who gain lower grades than expected or hoped for generally have two options:
• Take a place at a lower level university, offering a place with lower grades
• Retake the final year of A level, focusing on your strong points and improving your weak points, thus gaining higher grades and reaching the university that your ability deserves.
We feel that the second option is the better of the two in the long term: one year longer at college now can lead to great things later in life!
A new challenge!
Students often find that a fresh start, at a new and challenging place of study, combined with personal attention during classes, and the experience they gained from sitting A2 exams, can mean a huge increase in their ability at a subject, with grade improvements that match.
Our focus for year 13 retakes is on exam skills. Quite often a fundamental flaw of exam preparation is too little time spent answering past exam questions, so we make sure that this is addressed right from the beginning of the year. The confidence gained at this early stage can have a great knock-on effect. We give class tests every two weeks that highlight the weak points in a student's knowledge, allowing them to focus on these areas, while continuing to practice questions in the stronger areas.
